98 Volvo Penta 5.0 won't start

Newbie here....first post. (Hope my protocol is correct)

I have a fuel injected 1998 Monterey Montura 196 with 114 hours on the clock. It has always started right up. After putting her away following a week on the lake about 2 months ago, I cleaned detailed her today and attempted to start her with muffs. Plenty of crank, no fire.

After checking several things found on this forum, I put a bit of fuel in the throttle body throats....started right up but won't keep running. I can hear the fuel pump running for a few seconds before I hit the ignition switch.

While I have many tools, I don't own a fuel pressure tester/gauge. I could use some words of advice as to what I might consider before moving on to purchasing one and fully testing the fuel system....if appropriate.

Thanks!

Re: 98 Volvo Penta 5.0 won't start

Hi,
To get you help, it really helps to know what engine you have.
Just because the boat is a 98 doesn?t mean the power package is a 98.
Also around that time Volvo used both ford and Chevy engines in the 5.0 size.
Troubleshooting steps can be different depending on brand.
You also talk about a throttle body ---does that mean you have EFI?
Engine serial number helps the most but engine model number will work.
Welcome to the board, most people get the help they need.
Good Luck Muc

Thanks for the reply.

I believe it's a 5.0 chevy, with EFI.

I'll try to respond tomorrow am with the details you suggest.

Thanks!

If the distributer is on the fanbelt end it is a ford and visa-versa for gm.

Sounds like fuel delivery. You said you could hear the pump, but is fuel getting to the throttle body? I would start with the easy stuff like fuel filter and checking for flow.

Re: 98 Volvo Penta 5.0 won't start

When you turn the key on, the brain runs the fuel pump momentarily to pressurize the injectors..it then runs the pump when it recognizes a certain ignition pulse count. The fuel injection should hold "rest pressure" with the key off. Throttle body injections are about 15psi.

Unlike a carbureted engine, fuel injection requires constant fuel pressure. If the system won't hold rest pressure (gotta leak) or the pump won't pump 100% of the time, it won't run.

Thanks all...

It's a GM engine.

I suspect fuel delivery also. The throttle body was dry before I poured a bit of fuel down the throat.

I was gonna spin off the fuel filter, but it won't budge. I replaced it before so I know is spins off by hand, but wonder if it's so tight now due to being pressurized? Instructions on filter say bleed system before removal. If I'm to relieve pressure prior to removal, how is that done?

Without a fuel pressure tester, how can I test for constant fuel delivery?

Again, I'll post engine data in just a while.

Engine Data: (Please advise if this is not sufficient)

5.0 GI PBYCCE

This morning I was able to spin off the fuel filter. Poured the gas from it into a jar and see no signs of water. Refilled the filter with fresh fuel, poured a bit more fuel into the throttle body, and the boat fires and runs, but only for a few seconds. We can see fuel pulsing into the throat, but unsure if it does so consistently as the boat dies pretty quickly.

Anxious to hear what I might take as a next step for diagnosis, and, grateful I am! :)

HI,
You have two fuel pumps. The low pressure pump is above the spin-on filter, the high pressure pump is on the vapor separator tank at the back of the engine (follow the fuel line to find it).
A previous poster talked about 15psi and holding a resting pressure --- not correct for a 5.0L throttle body. Should be 29psi high/6psi low and pressure will drop as soon as pumps stop.
You can check for a good ground at each pump electrical connector and battery voltage on the other pins for 2 seconds after key on and while cranking
Without a pressure gauge there is not a lot more that you can do.
See if you have power and ground at both pumps and if you do and still won't run might want to get a pressure gauge and service manual #7797454

Thanks, MUC, for the clarification. I'm more familiar with street stuff...some similarities, some differences! It does sound like a fuel delivery problem.

Re: 98 Volvo Penta 5.0 won't start - Problem Solved

Paid $65 for a mobile marine mechanic to come out and push a module connection back together....boat runs fine. Large finned black module in front of throttle body (Ignition?) had right connector loose.

Nice guy, showed me around the engine a bit, commented on how clean my boat is with incredibly low hours (114) and how the engine is virtually just broken in at this point.

Had my mind all up to sell it due to low use, and after the kind comments and praise I'm all emotional and don't want to sell again. :)

Regardless....thanks to all for the help. Seems a cheap fix/good outcome.
