98 Nissan 40 over rev limiter?

I have a 98 Nissan three cylinder 40D Plus EPTO. The owners manual doesn't say whether it has an over rev limiter. Occasionally, when catching air off wave tops, I get a lowered RPM for a moment and then the rpm picks right back up. Anyone know if the outboard has an engine over rev limiter like I assume. Doesn't seem like air in the fuel line or anything like that as the rpm switch is prompt and clean with no sputtering. Also, just how bad is it to put the engine through this condition? Not always avoidable, but should I be more circumspect with my throttle?

Modern Tohatsu over-RPM detectors stay engaged once triggered. You would need to shut down and restart in order to clear the warning. Works like the oil problem buzzer system on your 40D EPTO.

To the best of my knowledge, the 40D does not have an over-RPM detector. So your issue may be a washed-out carb or other problem.

Yes, it's generally bad to suck air through the water pump. I'd try to limit that as much as possible.

The rev limiter is built in to the CD module on that model and is designed to keep you from spinning the crankshaft of the engine by improper operation of the engine.

Thank you for the replies. I have been informed that the two cylinder models don't have the over rev limiter, but my three cylinder model does. Neither the over rev limiter, the oil level warning buzzer nor the over heat sensor require a restart on my outboard to reset. I will try to curb my enthusiasm for launching.

your motor does have the rev limiter, the drop in rpm is because of the carb floats when you jump the wave, you can do a little carb mod (what we do in racing) to prevent this from happening .....

I hate the same issue when I was in choppy water on the inflatable!
Besides that though, my impeller would stop pissing after that, not fun!
