98 Larson 186 SEI BR or 97 Chris-Craft 19 Concept BR?

Hello All,

My first post to the iboats forums, but I have been reading threads by others for a couple of years now.

I grew up going to the lake every weekend and boating with my family on my dad's 16 ft closed bow speed boat. Now I have a kid of my own and would like to create those memories with her now.

So to the reason for my post. I am looking at two boats that are pretty equal in size and age and was looking for some feedback on which I should go for. I tried to get a Marine surveyor to help me out but the only ones in my general area are booked until the third week in June and the way boats are selling I don't think I can wait that long.

The first is a 1998 Larson 186 SEI with a Volvo 4.3, upgraded with a four barrel corroborator (205 hp). The boat is supper clean and looks to be in great condition. Comes with bimini top, smaller bikini top, and bow and cockpit covers. Current owner has had it for 7 years and has stored inside and taken care of it. But there are some issues. First being it needs a new prop as he hit something with it last year. He took it into the marina and the replaced a lot of items in the stern drive (about a $1,000 of work). Second there is a 6 to 7 inch gouge in the keel that is below the water line. The fiber glass is visible so this would need to be fixed. And lastly there is a spot in the floor between the fiberglass floor in the bow and the ski locker that is rotten (its only 3 inches tall and goes the width of the ski locker). Owners explanation was that the previous owner left it outside and the bow and cockpit covers leaked where they came together and let water in which pooled and rotted the floor right there. I have looked over the rest of the boat and the floor is very solid everywhere else and the explanation does fit the type of damage. I am pretty handy and would have no problem fixing the gel coat and floor. He is asking $6500 for this boat so I would knock some off for the things that need to be fixed. (link to craigslist is below).

Sorry this is getting a little long. :embarassed:

The second is a 1997 Chris Craft 19 Concept with the same exact motor less the four barrel Corroborator (190 hp). Pictures of this boat show it to be supper clean. It comes with the bimini top, fenders, life vest and a few other odds and ends, but no cockpit or bow cover. This boat I have not yet looked at, but it has the snap in carpet and the gel coat deck underneath (is this better than carpet over a wood floor?). The owner has moved to Texas and has a friend selling it for him. They just replaced the vinyl on the sunpad and rear bench seat. I spoke to the seller on the phone and he says that the floor is solid and there are no major damage to the gel coat that would require repair and the prop looks like it is brand new. Here is the scary thing with this boat, the engine has been completely rebuilt in 2008 due to a failed winterization (approximate cost from seller $3200). This was not done professionally. It was done by the owner and the seller. The seller seems like he knows what he is talking about and I will definitely take it for a test run before any money is exchanged. He is asking $6750 and I offered $6500 before I looked at it, as that was my max budget when I started looking. (link to craigslist below)

Both Trailers are single axle and have newer tires and working wiring.

So with those facts does one of them stand out as a clear winner? I know that Chris-Craft is a higher end boat, but I just wanted to pick someone else's brain prior to making a large purchase.

Regards, Ben

Re: 98 Larson 186 SEI BR or 97 Chris-Craft 19 Concept BR?

I can't say much about the Chris Craft, but I just finished a restoration on my '97 Larson 186 SEI BR (my signature below has a link to my restoration thread). The soft spot in the deck is a bit concerning, although my mooring cover also leaks at that point and lets in water. In my boat, that led to some wet foam that, along with the deck, had to be replaced.

Larson switched to engineered stingers and bulkheads in late '96 or '97, so that boat shouldn't have any wood structure underneath the deck. You do want to check very carefully for rot in the transom, though. (You could probably say the same for most boats of that vintage, I suppose.) The Larsons were particularly prone to water intrusion around the thru-bolts for the swim ladder in the back. Several of us Larson owners who found rotten transoms all noted that the problem began around the bolts for the ladder. It's hard to check, because Larson finished that area with a carpeted board on the back of the engine compartment that conceals the inside of the transom. Problems in that area start around the ladder mount and migrate down and toward the center part of the boat, eventually to the lower part of the keyhole. If you can get a screwdriver on one and it spins easily, I'd be concerned about rot. Another possible telltale sign - that wasn't apparent soon enough to help me -- is any evidence that the decking on starboard side of the carpeted hold (next to the engine) has been getting wet. If the carpet looks matted or mushy, or if there is white residue in the carpet, be very thorough in your inspection. Even though my transom was half rotten, there was no flex when putting weight on my outdrive, and there was no discernible difference in sounds when I rapped the transom with a rubber mallet.

My boat was repowered with a 350 Mag Alpha One, but it most likely also had the Volvo 4.3 originally. Of the several Larson owners I know who have the 4.3, I haven't ever heard any of them complaining it feels underpowered.

I'm quite happy with my 186 SEI (I would have been happier had it not required restoration!) and I think it's a nice boat.

Hope this helps,
Jim

Welcome to iBoats. . . .

"carburetor"

The Chris-Craft is so much a better boat. I would go for that one if it were me deciding.

Can't speak on the larson, but my '99 Chris Craft is wood free- I'd bet the '97 is as well which would seal the deal for me. When you go look at it, raise the engine cover or one of the front seats and look underneath the seat itself - it should be a synthetic material and not wood which is a huge plus. The snap in carpet is a huge plus over regular carpet (the CC has a self bailing deck vs permanent carpet which holds moisture) and as far as the engine rebuild, I'd hire a marine surveyor or research yourself what to look for and have it inspected. If you feel comfortable examining it yourself, research "used boat" and "what to look for" on the forum -hundreds of great posts to be found with a punch list for you both for the engine and around the boat itself. Regarding the engine, pick up a compression gauge from a auto supply place and take a compression reading on each cylinder. Basic steps are to pull the plug on the distributor (so it wont start when you turn the starter) and install the gauge on each cylinder and crank the engine only long enough to take a reading (need two people). You are looking for consistent numbers across the board on all cylinders - need to look in manual as to what number to expect, 105, 110, etc.

Thanks JASinIL2006!

The knowledge that the Larson is a fiberglass constructed boat under the deck gives me a little more confidence in the boat. Also, I will make sure to check the transom around the swim ladder.

Also, checked out your restoration thread. Your stereo set up looks pretty cool!

Thanks for the input on the two boats! Took the Chris-Craft for a test run last night and put a down payment on it. The Self-bailing deck sold me on the Chris-Craft and it didn't need any work and the owner had two props for it. Looking forward to years on the water!
