Here?s the scoop: I bought my 1996 Chaparral used a couple of years ago. I winterized and changed the oil myself. This year I had a shop do it. They informed me that the engine block is a 1998, not a 1996. The SN on the carb cover is a 1996. Best of all the fuel pump is most likely not a marine fuel pump and is not bolted to the block but just hanging by the fuel lines. Not cool. Also, The tech though it may not be wired correctly. It is wired directly to the ignition and may not be going through the oil pressure sensor. He quoted me around $700 to make it right. Holy S#!*!. I know this guy and worked with him for years so I trust him but, Holy S#!*. As I was looking at the Merc parts list to put this thing back together...$200 fuel pump, $100 bracket, $50 fuel line, I'm starting to see where he's coming from.

What I need is a picture (or 20) of a correctly assembled fuel pump/filter on the block. All the manuals I looked through are just cut-out illustrations. I need to know if the cooling pipes are going to be in the way or not. Any help on this is appreciated.

Todd, if the fuel pump you are using has been working OK, you can probably secure it to the block with any solid mount with rubber grommets (for vibration) and install an oil pressure switch to shut it off when the engine is not running. Also you will need to connect it to your starter solenoid to feed 12 volts to it when cranking. The pump should not run with the engine not running, that's definately a safety issue. Oil pressure switches are available from Mercruiser for about $25 and can be mounted on a T fitting off the oil pressure gauge sending unit just above the oil filter or mounted near the distributor. Total cost below $50 if you are handy. Get a manual for the wiring diagram.
