I replaced the starter on my 98 Bayliner with a 5.0. The motor cranked over twice and on the third try there was nothing, no power to my gauges and nothing to the starter not even a click. All accessories horn, bilge, blower etc... are still working, tried the circuit breaker but I can't even get it to budge so assuming it's already pressed. I see in the manual there should be a 20amp fuse any ideas where I could find it?

Yep, did clean the connections, removed and inspected / cleaned the circuit breaker connections now nothing to accessories. It seems the breaker might be tripping so will retrace steps to wiring starter. How much movement is there in the breaker switch?

OK, jump the 2 large lugs on the slave. starter should operate. If not, check the cable ground connection, Or the starters solenoid is bad or there is a poor connection on the starter

Not to sound or make u look stupid, but did u bench test starter MULTIPLE times? If direct jump doesn't at least get a spark, then u have bad connection somewhere. If you get spark but no starter engagement=bad starter or noid. Perhaps u didn't have a bad starter to begin with when all the time it was bad connector. My main circuit breaker became faulty and wouldn't supply required voltage/amps to my starter, which "ate" my ring gear on my motor. Go a buy yourself the best amp/voltage tester thet u can afford. Trust me!

Not to worry I take no offence I wouldn't ask if I knew when it comes to electrical issues I am a little stupid
Ring gear on your starter? That's what happened to my old starter hence the new one.
Yes I tested outside of the boat and connected and tested before bolting it up, then cranked 3 times after bolting it in before it died. I didn't want to half to squeeze in there to remove and install again

Jumping the slave turns it over, sounds like it's got good juice turning too.
I've got to take off for a few days of racing won't get back to the boat until Wednesday, I'll try any other suggestions then.
thank you

So that says cable and battery are good, Now take a jumper from the battery pos side and touch the small yellow/red wire . This should activate the slave and spin the starter. , Check the Black wire to see it is is grounded ,no ground =no relay operation
No= is corroded contacts inside the slave
Yes= no power from the key switch

Sorry for the delay in responding, is it touch the wire or the post the small yellow red wire connects to? It's a slip on connection with a boot so I have to remove the wire, if I touch the post then the starter turns over, if I touch inside the boot to the wire then nothing

Embarrassed to say it was the fuse to the key switch. All back up and running, will be on the water this weekend. Thanks for all the help and suggestions from everyone.

Examine positive and ground cables carefully. Sounds like you bumped something. Go direct at starter (jump) and see if works correctly. I had a positive cable become corroded through after it had been nicked. I like to have never solved a problem similar to yours. If fact, I almost replaced starter. Always bench test electrical devices before replacing them. Good luck! Been there@!

Google 1995 Bayliner. There is a manual somewhere to indicate where panel is located.
