Hello guys, it's been awhile.
Back with a new boat to me. 17ft Deep V tracker with a 40hp ELPT Mercury. OE323808

Anyway, I took the boat out, fires up after cranking with choke applied. I went crusing WOT to see how it would do. Runs good, however after getting off the fuel I hear a single chrip from the motor and it dies.
I attempted to start with the switch, I get nothing, starter doesn't attempt to engage. Let it sit for around 5 minutes and then it starts up.
This has happened 4 times, after that I loaded it back up and headed to the house.
I thought this might be overheating but it is not. The impeller it pumping very well and the stream of water is strong.

This is a 2 stroke with no oil injection.

Think it may be electrical but just don't know where to start. Maybe a relay or the CDI box?
Anyway to check this?

Thanks for any advise.

No expert but maybe my comments will bring them in

With a chirp and then dies, and to add nothing happens when key is turned, sounds to me like bad or loose connection.

Might be the key switch, maybe a chafed wire and when throttling back something makes contact. A bad connection will heat up and maybe giving it time it ,makes contact again. Check the battery cables on both ends

Thanks for the reply, thinking it might be the thermoswitch mounted in the head. Since it only is happening when coming off WOT it might be the sudden change in water flow and think it's getting hot and grounds out the ignition. IMO?

I will test it this weekend by disconnecting that switch. I will update this thread once completed.

Ignition does not work this way.

Wiring problem in control box or at motor cowl. When you pull back something is shorting ignition to ground(motor dies) and is apply ground to overheat horn for a second( the chirp)
