Well since my skiff is on the trailer post Frances and not yet back in the water on the Jet Dock, I am using the opportunity to do my 6 month Lower Unit service. Went ahead and drained the lower unit lube, pulled the prop and cleaned and greased the propshaft. I had bought a new impeller months ago, but had never gotten around to doing it so now is the time...I unscrewed the Lower unit, and now I am STUCK....I can't figure out where the shaft is attached inside. The unit dropped about 1/2 an inch and stopped...I am afraid to force it as I don't want to bend the shaft..
I went to the tohatsu website and no help there, just the owners manual online which I read cover to cover....If anyone has any insight, I would be really appreciate it. I'd like to get this done before Dark and get her back in the water tonight. Thanks

Not familiar with 40D, but did you put it in forward gear and drive the shift lever pin out? It should be just above the lower unit on the front side. If not, bolt the lower unit back on, and use a small punch to drive out the roll pin. Also some models have a speedo tube.

I just replaced the water pump in my 18E today. It was the easiest replacement I have ever done. I didn't have any unrully corroded or stuborn bolts/nuts. I recommend getting the Clymer manual.

There should be a split pin that you need to remove just above the lower unit right at the front of the motor. If you remove this pin, the lower unit should drop easily. I am assuming that your lower unit is the same as my 50B. Good luck!

Z
