I am helping a buddy with his 97 Nissan and it keeps melting the Brown wire on the 4P connector from the Magneto to the CDI in the 4P connector. The issue drains the battery and has smoked a few CDI's. I am thinking that the current being sent to the CDI from the mag might be to high. Maybe a rectifier issue?

I have not had a chance to chase wiring on his boat yet, but I thought I would throw it out there in case someone has seen this fault before.

I have attached a snapshot of the wiring diagram and a picture of the CDI with the green 4P connector depicted.

Thank you in advance for your time

For clarification Block 2 is the CDI and Block 4 is the rectifier.

Hi Sea Rider, I checked the ground block and found them all loose and corroded. After a wire brush and a a good tightening I retried the unit and I only was getting spark on one of the coil packs. I suspect we fried the CDI trying to pull to much current through it with the loose grounds. I have a replacement CDI in hand and will report back what I find.

Hope that was the culprit. Everybody overlooks ground wires, very important for correct engine performance and long lasting electrical elements. I clean mines regulalrly every once in a while to a shinny state along block grounds where electrical elements connects to.
