I think I was sold the wrong oil filter. I haven't got the old one off yet (posted earlier for tips since mine is WAY out of reach in a tight spot) but planned to try tomorrow.
So, being the creature of habit I am, I always research my part numbers one last time before installing anything.
The filter I was sold by our local boathouse is a Mercury filter 35-866340K01
Which from my research appears to be for the 4.3 with remote filter setup, which mine is not.
Can anyone confirm and provide an alternative (even if auto) filter that will be ok if this one won't work?
Ideally I'd like to jump on this first thing in the morning and get the oil and LU fluid done before we take her out.
Thanks in advance!

You are correct, you bought the wrong oil filter. You needed Merc part number 35-883702Q FILTER, Oil (Quicksilver Brand) or 35-883702K FILTER, Oil (Mercury Precision Parts Brand).

The one you bought fits the 4 & 8 cylinders or the remote filter system. You need the thinner V6 filter.

As a reference point, you can also use AC-Delco PF52 or PF52E part numbers as they are for the GM V6 engines... Then just cross the number over to any filter brand of your choice.
