97 EVINRUDE FICHT 150HP .. WHY DOES IT SPIT & SPUTTER????

MY ENGINE CRANKS RIGHT UP, BUT ONCE WE HAVE BEEN ON THE WATER FOR A WHILE, IT BEGINS TO RUN BAD. NOT KNOWING MUCH ABOUT MOTORS, I TOOK A FRIEND ALONG TO HELP PINPOINT THE PROBLEM. HE SAID IT SOUNDED LIKE A CYLINDER WASN'T FIRING OR THAT MAYBE I HAD TRASH IN THE FUEL. ONCE WE GOT HOME WE CHECKED EACH PLUG AND ONE WAS DIRTY AND SMELLED LIKE GAS. I HAVE HAD THIS SAME PROBLEM FOR OVER A YEAR. MY DEALER/SERVICE MECH HASN'T BEEN ABLE TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM, HE SAYS HE IS UNABLE TO GET THE MOTOR TO DO ANYTHING BUT RUN WELL IN THE SHOP. WHAT COULD BE CAUSING MY PROBLEM?? ALSO, I HAVE NEVER RAN OUT ALL MY FUEL, WHEN I GET TO 1/2 TANK, I WILL ALWAYS ADD ABOUT 20 GALS. COULD MY FUEL BE BAD? IF SO, COULD I ADD SOME TYPE OF OCTANE BOOSTER AND IS THERE SOMETHING YOU CAN ADD TO RID YOUR TANK OF ANY WATER OR CONDENSATION?? THANKS FOR ANY ADVICE!!!

You are posting in the wrong area. <br />Try engines and motors. <br />All caps is a definate no no. It is considered yelling.

MG is right, caps no no and post to engine forum.. <br /><br />but some quick things you can check..<br /><br />next time it happens, pull the cover off, and with an rag, pull each spark plug off, one at a time and make sure all of them affect the engine, it should get rougher when you pull it off..<br /><br />second thing, when it happens, pump the fuel primer bulb and make sure its hard.<br /><br />third thing. take another tank (external) and try switching to that next time you have the problem.<br /><br />forth thing,, next time it happens, put your hand on the head.. you should be able to keep your hand there for a slow count to five.. if you can't cos its too hot, then something is wrong with the cooling system and its probably dropped into saftey mode... (though I think that actually kills the engine, so its probably not that...)<br /><br />good luck..<br /><br />rgds<br /><br />Frank
