I have a 97 DT200 on a 22' center console. Purchased new in 99. Approx. 450 hrs. Dropped a piston last March and have been waiting for parts since that time. The top of the piston was burned to the top ring. Boat has never overreved or overheated. No warnings. Pampered. The cause is suspected lean out and is still undetermined. Fuel injection?? Have a water seperator and no water indicated in the fuel system.

Local machine shop finaly rounded up all of the parts (1 year) only to find that the cylinder sleeve did not match the existing parts in the motor. Sleeves in the motor were closed and the "Suziki" parts (3 tries) all were open. Local shop could not get sleeve out of block and entire left bank was sent to California to a specialist. They were able to remove the sleeve, but they could not identify or match the sleeve and took it to the Suzuki Corp offices in California. According to Suzuki, the sleeve does not exist. Puportedly went through all CAD drawings on file and it was never made. Currently the machine shop in CA is custom manufacturing the part.

Is Suzuki really that bad on parts delivery?

Any idea what I have? Prototype motor?

Do I have any recourse against Suzuki other than fixing and dumping the motor?

Comments appreciated as it is evident that Suzuki goes out of its way distance themselves from their customers.

Re: 97 DT200 sleeve

I'm not sure what you want to happen.

A motor with 450 hours and a year model 5+ years old can and will have problems.

That's just "the odds"

Exactly why it fried a piston, and ate the sleeve should be determined BEFORE any extensive repairs are made as this maladay can reoccur, and probably will occur again if not corrected.

That being said, the decision to rebuild was made between you and your mechanic and as you get deeper into this hole in the water, at some point it might be time to bail out and find another motor. Even another brand if you desire.

Is Suzuki bad on parts ect? I've seen at least one other occasion where someone has come here mad as heck over not finding a part for a Suzuki. But otherwise Suzuki is not gennerally the brand brought up as even problematic.

If it's warrantied by the manufactuer, have the manufacturer take care of it.
