Hey everyone!

So I am helping a friend with a 97 bayliner capri 1950 he just purchased, it has the 3.0 Mercruiser. I went with him to look at the boat, and it started right up and sounds great. He got a great deal on it also, but there is a few issues.

The trim up uses the button on the throttle labeled 'trailer' not the up position of the trim switch, I am assume just a wiring issue.

We decided to take it for its maiden voyage yesterday, and at first it was much more difficult to start this time. But once started it doesn't seem to idle unless in 'throttle only' setting and giving it some gas, the issue is then when trying to engage it into drive the engine will die. After a few minutes of trying and getting into drive the boat ran great! And even after running for a while and coming down to an idle the engine would shut off and still have the same issues trying to get it started again.

Could this be an issue of bad gas? Or I honestly can't remember now whether these engines are carborated or not, if it may just be a tuning issue.

Probably a faulty trim limit switch on the gimbal ring.

Normal, it's a carbed engine, not EFI. After starting, you need to let the engine warm up before trying to take off.

Since the boat is new to you guys, a full tuneup, compression test, timing check, carb adjustment, filter changes etc. is in order.

Might have a look through some of the info in the stickies at the top of the forum.

Thank you! Yeah I advised him of likely needing a tuneup. On a boat/motor this size, what do you think a basic tuneup would cost (if there is no major problems)? Just a rough idea. Compression is great I did check that. I am only familiar with small two stroke engines (vintage jetskis 2-3 cylinder) and messing with a 90hp Suzuki outboard.

We did let the motor warm up prior to taking off, and even after running for about 30+ minutes, and coming down to an idle at dock it would die, and then the same would happen when trying to take off again not being able to get it in drive without shutting off. Same happened with reverse also.

Also regarding the trim, and the speedometer does not work either, is there a wiring diagram specific to this boat I need to look for so we can repair those issues?

Also are these boats meant to have power steering of any kind? Was curious, as it felt there was no steering assistance and of course pulls extremely hard to the port side.

Look at the motor in front and see if there is a power steering unit....

Also if this has a Mercrusier outdrive...Do some reading about lower shift cable.

Good luck with the new boat!

Is it dieing just coming down to idle, or when shifting into neutral from fwd or rev, and also dieing when going from neutral to fwd or reverse.
If when shifting, it's probably the shift cable as checkmate mentioned.
This might help you understand the system.

Also, here is a link to download a 97 owners manual. You might find it useful. Click Here

Your here on iboats already........save your friend a couple hunded bucks and do it yourself. These guys will help anyway they can.

But if you dont feel good about it....take to a certified mechanic and have them do the work.

Good Luck!
