I have a 3hp 1997 johnson that i was testing in a tank of clear water to make sure impeller was pumping water ok. I noticed a light oil residue in the water and around the side of the tank after running motor for a few minutes. I did not notice any leakage while motor has been on stand the in my garage. Thanks for any help!!

Welcome to iboats. :)

That's unburned oil from running. They're horribly inefficient at low RPMs. A lot of the fuel that's sucked in goes straight out the exhaust wihtout burning. But they are very efficient at high RPMs and there is far less unburned fuel. The unburned gas evaporates and leaves behind the unburned oil which floats on the water and clings to the motor and pail. Didn't take long, did it?
