'97 225 ocean runner won't idle.

About 2 months ago I bought a '97 Johnson 225 ocean runner on a 22' bay quest for $3,500. The owner thought the engine was blown and for that price I was willing to send it to a shop and have it rebuilt. At the shop they tested the compression and all was good. They said it just needed a power pack and a stator (sounds great to me so far too). After 2 weeks in the shop and $1,300 I put the boat in the water it ran fine for about two hours then began to kill when backing down to idle. Next day I took it out for about 4 hours and the dying at idle began to worsen so much that now it wouldn't run at all then it wouldn't even start. Back at the shop they said they found water in the gas tank, then they cleaned out the carbs, swapped some parts around from another 225 ocean runner that they know works, took the intake off so that they could check the reeds, and then consulted with another mechanic from another shop because they were stumped. Now they say that with the carbs laying on a flat surface they are able to see warpage where the carb mounts to the engine and the carbs are sucking air. They are saying the carbs are made out of plastic and are a bad design from Johnson. They are going to try to use some carbs from another used engine and see if that works. If not they said I will have to buy new carbs at $150 each x6= $900. Has anyone ever heard of this "bad plastic carb design by Johnson" or am I being taken for a ride?

There could very well be an issue with repsect to warpage on the plastic style carbs, particularly if the engine has ever been overheated. What is not clear is why it initially ran for two plus hours without this symptom. That is unless the engine is in fact overheating and the alarms are not in working order.I'm surprised that you made no mention whether the cooling system to include the waterpump and T/stats were serviced as part of the work performed.Particularly since the engine was known to be problematic when you brought it down.Did the mechanic offer to show you the warped mating flange of the carb bodies. It wouldn't be difficult to see ,if they were to be placed on a flat piece of glass say using a .002 - .003 feeler.Otherwise, your syptoms sound as if they could be restricted slow speed orifices in the carburetors.I mean,if the guy is shooting straight with you on his findings in the fuel tank, there is quite possibly some crud along with the water that migrated into the freshly rebuilt carbs. If this engine is being run on a built in fuel tank aboard(that may be contaminated and possibly corroded along with old fuel lines ,it needs to be addressed before attempting to run the engine on them.Is the vro(oil mix feature) still in service on this engine or has it been disabled and you are mixing 50:1 in the fuel tank?Just curious.

The previous reply sounds good and makes sense. But something sounds fishy here. I don't know beans about plastic carbs (too new for me) but with metal ones if the flange is warped you just flatten it out with sandplaper on a surface plate. Can't you do that with plastic?

Other than water or dirt in the gas, why would all six carbs suddenly go kaflooey on a running engine and need replacement?

And what about the original diagnosis of a "blown" engine? What are we not seeing here?

You can look up the price of the carb bodies on the BRP site. The only way I could think that a plastic carb would warp is from intense heat.

I've been to enough mechanics to get the sense that yours are not the right guys to be tackling this job...I just dont get a good feeling when they start sratching their heads and doing "let's see if this works" repairs.

I'd consider taking it somewhere else...

Thank you guys for your help. I'm going to have the cooling system checked. There is a strong stream of water coming from the engine when it is running. Is this a good enough indicator of a working cooling system?

it's good enough to know the impeller is pumping, but not if the thermos are opening.

You can probley save the carbs with a little sanding on a flat plate. Check the timer and idle timing.
