When I try to start there's just a hard click or clunk...it's like the engine is trying to turn over but can't. battery is strong. I just had a valve job done about 4 months earlier. Any help would be apprieciated

Are you sure there's nothing wrapped around the shaft?

Something is locked up. as mentioned check the pump for obstructions, then remove plugs and try to turn over the engine by hand. also reverse the rotation of the engine by turning it backward as your starter may be stuck in the flywheel. if the pump is free of obstructions and the engine is frozen, there is an internal problem ranging from a stuck piston to a blown rod further investigation will be required. You say you had a valve job, I believe you have a 2 stroke engine they do not have valves, this is a little confusing at best.

I just bought this 97 1100 wave runner a couple of days ago and I thought the previous owner told me it had a valve job...I'm certain that I heard wrong...I don't know anything about 2 stroke engines...but willing to learn.

I tried to turn engine by hand ...moved a little and then stuck....reversed this process with the same conclusion....moved a little and stuck. I could hear what sounded like small pieces of metal all broken up internaly. Obviously a bad problem for me. What does this sound like to you? I paid 500 dollars for the wave runner knowing somthing was wrong with it just not sure what. Owner said he didn't think it was anything major. I know I probably got took, but I thought 500 bucks was still a pretty good deal even if I have to put some major bucks in it. At least I hope.

Could you please give me some advise. What do you think the problem might be and how much it might cost and could fixing it myself be an option being that I have all winter to do it?

sounds like a blown crank shaft, pour some trans fluid in the plug holes and see if it turns but I believe it has hatched the engine. You can pull the carbs and intake and remove the reeds then you can actually see what is blown. sbt cost for 1100 with exchange plus shipping is900 bucks plus gaskets ,so a grande for a rebuilt is what you are looking at.HOWEVER you can part it out and recover your money pretty easily. a crank is 375 by itself. I paid 400 for an old sea doo with a trailer and parted it out got my money back plus a trailer and took the hull put a little magic to it in my shop and built one heck of a yard toy for my granddaughter, it is mounted on springs and she has a blast with it.
