96 Yamaha 25hp, kill switch?

I just acquired a 1996 Yamaha 25hp tiller and manual pull start. It runs great but I can't seem to be able to shut the motor off without pulling the tether from behind the red button or pulling the choke and I don't think either is the correct method. Am I missing something?

Are you saying the motor does not have a kill button or are you saying it does but it just does not work when you push it?

It has a red button next to the choke and fuel connector that the tether clips behind so you can't push it. I see no other buttons or switches. Thanks

give a full model # so we can look at what it should have.

Here is a web site that shows motor owners manuals back to 1998 and that says to push the red button to kill motor or pull lanyard of to kill

I'm pretty sure I tried pushing the red button a few times. I will post that model number Friday . Thanks
