I have a boat that I acquired from a friend's estate. It was stored outside and not touched for 7 years. At some point in time it froze enough to pop 5 of the core plugs at the bottom of the block. It's not been run since that happened until yesterday.

I've been tinkering and managed to bring it back life slowly. Got the carb rebuilt and started it up yesterday. Seems to run great, but...

There's a tube from the right valve cover that goes to the air intake, in a car motor it would be for crankcase ventilation and there would probably be a PCV valve there. There appears to be steam coming out of this tube when it runs, not smoke, steam. I see no signs of water in the oil and the thing sits and runs great on the muffs. It did get a little warm before I shut it off, around 200+ degrees according to the guages. I know car engine operating temps are between 180 and 225, so I don't know if that's just because that's how hot it runs or if I can expect muffs to be inadequate cooling for such a large motor.

But the steam bothers me.

Like I said, no obvious signs of water in the oil, and it runs good. I'm wondering if it has a cracked head. A crack in the water jacket but not the compression part of it. Anybody have any suggestions or opinions?

Ayuh,... It's still a Motor, even if it's a Ford....

You probably need a new Impeller in the raw waterpump,... That's the Overheat, not the hose..
Boats usually run 140? or 160?...

As for the Steam,.... Condensation will burn off as Steam,...
If you're Not Gaining oil on the Dipstick,....
Maybe it Ain't Cracked....

Roger That... Thanks so much for the reply.

Next question, is it possible for the exhaust manifold/riser to be cracked thus letting water in where it don't belong?

Just for your reference, you have a "HU" model Volvo which came out in 95.
