Trying to get the boat ready for 4th of July, but all the local mechanics have been booked a month out, leading me to ask for help diagnosing the issue. I can't get a shop to diagnose anytime soon, but they are willing to quickly get me parts if I can diagnose it.
Situation: 1996 Mercury 75 hp. The engine has no spark to any cylinder.
Background: Last time out, the engine ran flawlessly all day. Turned it off to light the grill and eat dinner. When I went to start the engine, I had no spark to any cylinder.
Analysis: I do not have all of the tools necessary to follow the CDI troubleshooting guide. I am a decent recreational mechanic, but very little experience diagnosing electrical issues. I have tested unplugging the harness that goes to my controls, so I do not believe the kill switch has failed. Since I lost all spark simultaneously, I believe the ignition coils are probably fine. I'm suspecting power pack, stator, or rectifier failing and causing loss of all spark.
NOTE: After reading about stator failure, I looked under the flywheel to see if I could see black insulation oozing. What I found is red and appears to be sealed. Maybe this isn't the stator?
Does this situation lead you to point to a specific part failing? I'm willing to run any tests I can, but I'm not completely familiar with the electrical parts on the engine. I can provide pictures if necessary. Thanks everyone for your help.
