96 mariner magnum alarm

Unhooked both temperature and oil sensors at engine but alarm still going off in controller. The motor is not overheating -- alarm sounds even before starting motor. Took ignition drive controls apart, unplugged brown and blue (heat?) wire and alarm went off. But when I unplug the brown and blue wire at the temperature sensor in the motor, alarm still sounds. Why is the alarm stopping only when I unplug the wire up in the ignition control? What might the problem be? Thank you.

What is your engine s/n?

Sounds like you may have a problem in the warning module but need the s/n to get the right wiring diagram.

Thanks, Gerry. The engine serial number is 00295324. We had to replace the control box and handle last year.

Re: 96 mariner magnum alarm

Is it a Magnum or Mag series as the Magnum is a EFI motor, if a EFI check water seperator on engine for water as it has a sensor in bottom of filter that sounds the alarm when you turn key on.

The cowling says 40 magnum. It is 4 cylinders and 2 carburetors. Thanks

Hi Gerry,

I took a picture of the sticker in that location with the serial number. I'm using an iPhone to post and can't find a function to upload the picture, but it says "serial number" and then the series of numbers that I typed before (there is a smear on the second 0 which could be a G, I suppose.) Under the number, it says "Mercury Marine, a division of Brunswick Corp.... I bought this boat 3 years ago. Is it possible that the cowling is not original to the engine? I'm stumped. Thanks for your help!

Disconnect the 2 wires from oil tank as either sensor in tank is bad or oil module they attach to. Most likely it the tank float as magnet become unglued from float.

Thanks, but we already tried unhooking that and also unhooking the heat sensor and neither worked. The alarm only stopped when we unhooked the heat sensor in the actual controller by the key switch. Is it a controller problem?

Re: 96 mariner magnum alarm

That s/n must be an 0G number, not 00 and if so, it comes up as:

MERCURY - ( 25 H.P. (1996 ))
Serial No: 0G295324 Model No: 1025313SD

which is a two cylinder so something is wrong somewhere.

Likely a OC instead of OG as they did not make the 40 Magnum in 1996 and a 1996 would be a 3 cylinder

Unplug the tan wire from module to control box as module may be bad.

Well if it is an 0C, then the year is way off:

MARINER - ( 40 H.P. (1990M ))
Serial No: 0C295324 Model No: 70404120D

Re: 96 mariner magnum alarm

Sorry for not knowing this, but where is the module? Is it by the switch box? We replaced that recently.
