96 johnson 90-v4 clanking noise

Throttling up no noise , when I back off the throttle, the motor makes a clanking noise.The boat is in the water.

If this is the 60 degree looper model you may be hearing what is known as "de-cell knock". They sometimes make a knocking sound upon decelleration. <br /><br />Without knowing which motor you have its hard to say.
