i put my 1996 bayliner jazz in the water this morning and i started up just fine and idled around 1000 RPM which from my understanding is where it should be idleing. When i put some throttle to it it seemed like it didnt want to go over 3000 RPM. Some of the time it would tach up but then it would bogg back down and when i reduced the the amount of throttle it would start running fine again but when i pushed the trottle back down it would either top out aroung 3000 or it would stall. any suggestions on what would cause this.

you are probably starving for fuel ,, you will really need to re do the carbs, I assume you found why it was leaking fuel, also the gas itself could be old and going bad.

Re: 96 jazz low RPM

use the factory manual
you will need your serial number also
2 different manuals on that 120
it also has cdm ignition
you will need an ohm meter to test those, then a special harness for voltage checks to eliminate electrical on motor

Re: 96 jazz low RPM

it's a force outboard powerhead so probably someone who still has force parts you can check with your napa auto parts dealer they carry outboard and marine parts but most of them don't realize it,, have them search in their small engine book.
part number out of their book is 18-7037

ok i appreciate that does the kit have new jets and gaskets in it? theres still the question of why it doesnt have problems tacking up when its on the trailer but when its in the water it wants to die after 3000 RPM.

Re: 96 jazz low RPM

on the trailer there is no load on the pump and no back pressure in the exhaust ,, a bad motor will run on the trailer and never even start in the water

watch out for those kits
i have seen my fair share that do not work
i only use oem parts when i replace things
i never use aftermarket

follow the manual step by step when u sync it also
