So the rev meter quit working and I replaced it... No joy there! Upon futher investigation I find the engine isn't charging..although it does run well indeed.
So here I am with a 40 amp charging circuit that don't work. It has TWO voltage regulators. One has a grey wire that goes to the rev meter..
I guess I need some simple instructions as to how to test the stator and both regulators..And anything else that might be causing the problem. And no I don't have a book, as this is the first time the engine has failed me.
Any and all help is desired and appreciated.

I doubt if it's a stator probably just the regulator the tach is connected to the other side is probably working or your battery would go dead, you can switch the tach wire to the other regular to check or heres the test.

Thanks I went out and did the regulater test on the regulator that the tach is connected too.. ALL of the leads seem to test OK. One way I get a reading and when reversing the leads I get no ohm reading.
The 2ed regulator is hidden behind the coils and I can't get to the plugs on it unless I move a bunch of stuff out of the way. Including the plug wires it seems.
What would the test be for the "switch" under the cowl?

What switch?

The thing on the passanger side of the engine with all the rubber capped wires going into it.. I think that thing is called a "switch".. It does something when the key is turned on. ? however I don't know what.

Ok I hooked up the 2ed regulator to the tach and got signal.. So I took both regulators out and one of them is heated up and cracked... so I have found 2 new ones across town in a shop and am going after them both.. This might give me a USED spare.. Xross your fingers for me.

That's pretty typical. There's several versions of the regulator. I think the ones that are potted in clear stuff so you can see the burn are also the weaker design. The black ones are supposed to be superior. CDI replacements are better than either.

hope it helps

The local guy had two that have the black stuff instead of the clear, which was on the engine. The part # has been changed by Mercury and the ones I got today both have a ground wire on them (the factory originals didn't) which I promptly grounded well to the plate bolts. I now have a tach that works and get extra volts when above idle.. TOMORROW I go to the water with it..
I THINK problem solved..
Jesus! $376.82 for two voltage regulators! Good thing it is the first time it has broke on me.
Thanks guys I'll be back if it don't work but I have good expectations.
