Hi, I'm not an outboard guy but I'm looking at buying a Pontoon with a 50hp Force motor.

I've heard mixed comments on Force motors and would like to hear from the guys that know.

Is this a good motor? Would you buy one knowing they have a "mixed" reputation?

Thanks!

Re: '96 Force 50hp

These motors have been out of production for some time, however, parts are still available. If you have to rely on a shop to perform all of your maintenance/repairs then it probably isn't going to be a pleasant experience. That could probably be said for most outboards regardless of brand. If you're a "do it yourself" type of guy with some basic mechanical ability and like to tinker, then you shouldn't have any problems. As far as reliability.....these motors are very reliable as long as they are properly maintained. They are a very simple basic design. Don't have all those "bells and whistles" like some of the others and may not produce quite as much horsepower as some of the later models, they're easy to fix and maintain.

Just my 2?

Thanks for the reply!

That is good info. I am a DIYer. I do all my own maintenance/repairs on my Volvo I/O.

What bells and Whistles are missing from the Force motors that I would find on other motors?

Re: '96 Force 50hp

The only engine warning you have is an over heat buzzer (if it's hooked up). Nothing to prevent over-reving. Since you run 50:1 premix, no oil injection warning alarms. No fuel/air mixture monitoring. If you run it too lean, it runs until it blows up etc.
