Hi all,
I have a Force 50 that I am having issues with. It will start good and idle, but while idleing it will stutter (best way I can describe it) occasionally every couple of sec or so. The carb has been gone through and cleaned. I feel like it is a low speed adjustment problem but I am not sure where to start adjusting this carb. any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Greg

BTW It will shift into gear fine, continue to stutter, and run fine on top end. Iwould like to know how to adjust top end also just fro reference

Re: 96 Force 50 carb adjustment

Greg,

I have a 1999 40 and the carb looks identical except for the bowl. This carb does not have a high speed adjustment. Th low speed adjustment is on the right side of the motor (drivers side) close to the top of the carb. It is a brass screw with a spring on it. Gently screw it in just till it seats and then back it out 1 turn (360 degrees). Now with the motor in the water - warmed up - and idling - you are ready for the fine tuning of the idle adjustment.

Turn the screw 1/8 turn to the left and wait for 10 seconds. If the sound did not change turn it 1/8 turn to the left and wait again for 10 seconds. DO this till the motor runs rough from being too rich. Remember this point.

Now turn the screw 1/8 turn to the right and listen for the sound of the motor to change. If no change turn 1/8 turn and wait 10 seconds again. Do this till the motor starts to run rough from being too lean. Remember this point and turn the screw until it is half way between the 2 points.

You cleaned the carb. Did you turn the carb upside down and try to blow through the gas intake fitting. If the needle seat or needle are not in good shape it will continue to let gas through after the carb is full. I always wipe it with alcohol before trying to blow through. If you can blow any through you will need a needle. This will probably clear it up for you but if not following is some other thoughts.

I have also seen a rough idle come from a sticking choke. You should also check the small recirculation lines on the motor. Make sure all lines are good and not cracked. Check that a spark plug is not fouling. Last thought is check air vent to fuel tank. Try a decarb. I do it at least 2 times a year and use Mercury' Power Tune and hear others work also.
