I have a 96 Evinrude 9.9 2 stroke that I use on my sailboat. Do to health problems last fall it was not winterized. So this spring I decided to tackle replacing the water pump impeller and cleaning the carb. The impeller was a pretty straight forward task. I was able to remove the carborator and brought home to disassemble and clean and reassemble with the rebuild kit I purchased.
I have been very apprehensive about this project as carborators has always seemed to be a dark art. I started disassembly following the steps in my shop manual. All was proceeding well right up to the point that I removed the core plug. The repair manual stressed the following:
"Do not allow anything to penetrate more than 1/8in. below core plug or the carborator casting will be irreparably damaged."
I think that I might have been overzealous in my core plug removal. Underneath it there appears to be a brass tube with a smaller brass tube inside that. The inner tube is not centered. It is touching the side of the outer tube on the side closest to where the float attaches. Is this normal and if not can it be ignored or repaired? Please see image below (I am sorry about the poor quality. I just could not get it to focus better):
Any help is much appreciated.
