I just purchased a 96 bayliner 1750 w/ i/o 3.0 and when I purchased it it was way over proped at 21 and would take for ever to get up on the water, I down sized from the 21 to a 17 and it seems to be putting me right where I need to be for rpms, I have noticed engine oil in the bilge maybe a half cup or so nothing extreme for a day out on the water. It seems to be coming from somewhere on the lower back side of the motor. I can't seem to pin point it though. It olny seems to leak at higher rpms by what I can tell. It was witerized and sat for over a year before I purchased it. any ideas would be helpful. I'm hoping its not a rear main seal if it is what would be reasonable to have that fixed. thanks for all your help.

your best bet to locate the leak is to clean everything off the engine and out of the bottom of the bilge, get everything as clean as you can

then get some oil absorbent pads, probably at your local auto parts store and line the bilge with them

top off the oil and take the boat out for a run, maybe even have some one else drive the boat while you watch the engine and note where you see oil dripping onto the pad

When performing any inspection of any piece of equipment or machinery it is critical that it?s clean. So, I recommend first cleaning the bilge and the motor ensure all traces of oil have been removed as best you can. Understand the lubrication system and how it flows by looking at the schematics.

Are you experiencing any oil consumption?
The best approach is a systematic approach. At this point you can determine if you have a leak in an oil line, a gasket or something as simple as a oil drain plug not seated properly. Patience is critical, it could take some time with the engine running and you inspecting with a good light and a mirror after the motor is cleaned. Good Luck!

A digital camera, mirror and some powder in a syringe (baby's nose sucker) will help see where the leak is coming from. Blow the powder where you think the leak is coming from and use the camera or mirror to pin point it.

Along with a bad seal/gasket, it's possible to have a rusted out oil pan or timing cover. Either way, if it's leaking from the backside of the engine, the engine is going to need to be removed for repair. Or I should say, it's going to be easiest to remove the engine to fix the oil leak.

Oil runs downhill, just like water. Start at the top, do the easy stuff first.

I would start at the crankcase breather (valve cover).

3.0L which 1 !??? Doesn't matter, clean the area at the harmonic balancer real good. And then follow previous responses!
Also, 3L oil pans tend to loosen up!

More likely there is a hole in the timing chain cover. That is what happens to mine. The only problem is that I have to send it to the shop to have it changed. The timing chain cover are made of steel and it rust very easily.

I found the leak it looks to be coming from the rear of the oil pan, looks like the oil pan gasket was replaced and it may have been off just a little bit possibly pinched. how hard is it to change this and can it be done without pulling the motor? I just pulled the spark plugs and there were two different size plugs in. Changed them out and fired it up runs great now just need to fix the oil leak.
