How come the cuttaway view in the manual shows an o-ring on the oil piston, but neglects to discuss it in the rebuild section? Disassembly of my VRO unit produced a crushed o-ring on the oil piston. The fuel and oil rebuild kits contained no new o-ring and the assembly photos don't show it either. I would assume that an o-ring is necessary at this point for proper operation. Any comments on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

don't need no stinkin' o-ring.
don't need no stinkin' piston
don't need no stinkin' VRO

There are so many stories about VRO problems ( including my one and only engine) that I would just say chuck the whole thing. Run pre-mix. At least it cannot mechanically fail.

Maybe easier said than done with all those fancy controls on a 1996.

My two cents worth. Cheers.

my advice is to maintain the entire oiling system and replace the pump every 6 years or so. its very reliable. most failures I saw blamed on the VRO were not oil failures. well at least since about 85 when VRO2 was introduced, the earlier versions were susecpitble to alcohol and certain fuel additives. there is a filter and a sensor in the tank that require periodic inspection.

A 1996 225 never came with a VRO. Perhaps thats where the confusion lies. Whats the model number of the motor you have?

Fubs, I belive what Dhadly is asking is the model number, VRO was replaced model wide by OMS about 95 or so.

The "VRO" has gone thru several oil piston designs over the years. If yours was a wide flat blue seal, that was a Teflon ring that worked very well. The early pumps had both one and two oring seals.

The completely servicable pumps did not come out until '98. The earlier repair kits did not include the oil system parts. OMC back then did not want anyone touching that part of the pump.

There was no VRO in 98. The units you mention are OMS pumps. If you are ordering VRO kits, that may be leading to confusion or getting the wrong parts.

Re: '96 225 VRO oil piston

OK, OK, I'm guilty of using the word "VRO" incorrectly, but only as a generic term for the Johnson-Evinrude oiling system, as that is what most people call it. That is why the word VRO is in quotes!

Actually, the last VRO was about 15 years ago in 1991. The '92 and later pumps were called Oil Metering Systems ( OMS ) and were identified by the blue-gray fuel outlet nipple. Contrary to some beliefs, the OMS pump was not a fixed 50:1 ratio output. The OMS varied a bit from 75:1 at idle to about 50:1 at high speeds. According to the VRO story listed in the FAQ section of this forum, most folks averaged about 60:1.

To Claude 70,

Yes, your 2004 pump is the latest design and is fully repairable.

To Flubs,

Your '98 pump is fully repairable also as long as the output fuel fitting is held in place with an oval steel plate and 2 Torx screws. If your pump does not have that, then it is an earlier model.

I have rebuilt the pump, and I guess I've answered my own question. The o-ring is essential. I also have been using the VRO term genarically. Thank you all for your reply's.

the "VRO" or OMS pump parts breakdown is in the ACCESSORIES section of the parts books, Microfiche, or parts on line.

A new pump assembly is about $265 in US dollars.
