96 150 ELEDB....can't get SEI lower unit all the way up

My lower unit bit the dust, so I went with an SEI and a new drive shaft. Spline measurements and shaft height on the two drive shafts appear to be the same with a micrometer. Old unit will slide in without much trouble, but it no longer has the shift shaft. We can get the new unit up to about 3/4" of being seated. We have jiggled every which way possible. Tried installing with the lower unit in reverse, neutral, and forward. We removed the controls from the boat, so we are guessing as to what gear is engaged on the top end. Is the top of the motor in forward when the top shift cable is pulled more toward the front of the boat? I can see up inside were the drive shaft is and can just barely see the teeth of the splines at the point we bottom out. I assume there is another gear that the drive shaft is not lining up with. How can we get this thing to seat? How do we turn the gear inside top end to help align things? 5 hours. Extremely frustrated.

Turn the flywheel as you push up on the lower unit you need to line up the driveshaft splines with the crankshaft splines. If you can't turn the flywheel then put the lower unit in forward and turn the prop the correct way this will turn the drive shaft. I would suggest before you put the lower unit in replace the impeller with a OEM one. SEI is not putting great impellers in their lower units.

Check that your shift shaft measurement is correct and that it is facing forward and sliding into place without interference. Un hook your spark plug wires , turn the flywheel and the prop shaft clockwise to align the spline. Do not see how you can see any spline. If the old unit goes into place minus the shift shaft but the new one does not that is where you need to consider. If you do not know what gear you are in you really need to get yourself the OMC manual to become familiar with some basics here.

And you are sure you have the correct lower unit ??----Measured length of driveshaft ?
