Hello all

I am looking to buy a 96 Procraft 180 Combo with a 135 Mariner outboard engine. Can anyone tell me anything about a 96 135 Mariner.

Thanks,
Ken

Re: 96 135HP Mariner

They are a loop-charged V6 with a displacement of 2.0 litre. They use BU8H surface gap spark plugs and have 3, twin barrel carbs. WOT should be between 5000 and 5500 rpm and they idle at 650+/-50rpm. The lower unit gear ratio is 2:1, and the engine weigh 184kg (404lbs). The cowls are 'Mariner Grey'. The oil injection system has a capacity of 11.4 litres (3 gal) and will run for approximately 8.7 hours. Recommended oil is TC-W3.

Anything else you'd like to know?

Re: 96 135HP Mariner

Thanks Cris for that information. This engine is on a fish and ski boat. Does this type engine idle good and able to handle running at very slow speeds for fishing and at the same time does it ramp up good to get skier out of the water. Some other web site recomended removing the oil pump and making it a pre-mix. Would you recomend doing that?

Thanks,
Ken

Ken,

Sounds like you're looking for the holy grail... something that is all things to all men.

As far as slow speed running they are as good as you'll get with a 2 stroke. If you need super smooth idle for long periods, get a 4 stroke, or a small kicker engine.

As for skiing, great, lots of bottom end torque. Makes sure you have a smaller (pitch) prop for that though. Skiing puts a very high load on the engine and you get round that by dropping prop size.

Disconnecting the oil injection system.... Why, is it faulty? If not, leave it running. The Merc oil system is the best on the market. Most people who have had major failures with oil injection have owned white engines :D. If you disconnect it and run pre-mix you'll make your slow running worst. At slow speeds the system reduces the oil ratio to about 80:1, so you'll have less plug fouling. Run pre-mix and the ratio stays at 50:1, putting more oil on the plugs...

Re: 96 135HP Mariner

Thanks Chris for all the good information. Yea I have one of those white engines now and that is what I was told with it. I cann't complain thow everything else has run good for me the last 5 years but its only a 70 HP and it doesn't get the sking job done for me now that the kids are getting older.

Thanks again,
Ken

Re: 96 135HP Mariner

If you plan ion putting the 135 on the same boat that the 70 was on.... You're gonna kill a pig!!! :D:D:D

Please send video footage :D:D:D

If you plan on doing a lot of skiing check out a prop Merc make just for skiing, it's called a 'High 5', and I've run one of them a few years ago just to see what they're like. Holeshot is ballistic!!!
