Cruising home and noticed water pressure suddenly at zero, so I cut the engine and then turned and looked back, smoke coming out of pee hole. It looks like i had some kelp wrapped around the lower unit covering the water intake ports. So my motor got hot. I crept the rest of the way in on my kicker. Then i tryed to start the big merc (its a 1966 950SS) but it did not start right away, it usually does.
I figure i should replace impellar, what steps would you reccomend taking, it still turns over, what might have happened?
Thanks

I would check compression first on all cylinders
to see if you melted a piston.
good luck,
M.Y.

okay M.Y.
I did the compression test, all 6 cylinders are within 10% of each other, with good compression.
Now what?
Thanks

Re: 950 overheated, need help

yeah compression on all is between 110-120
I am going to pull lower unit tonight and replace water pump with new kit. I do have manuals. I guess that a motor this old (1966) will not have a saftey overheat switch, is this a correct assumption?
