I have a VXR 650 that I've had from the beginning. I am thinking of upgrading it, it's all original. Only has 50 hours on it, looks just like new. I'd like to get a bit more speed out of it. Ideas??

I would just check the impeller and see if it is an aluminum one if it is it's probably worn out go to a stainless one , the 650 engine is reliable and wasn't really meant for mods, you would most likely spend a ton of money and only realize a small top end increase. On the other hand if your impeller is worn out changing it could make a big difference in the ski.

The ski has less than 100 hours on it, maybe 150 tops. I would not be surprised is the impeller is crap, but it runs just like it did when it was new. Anyone ever try a different grate or anything on these 650's? I has been a champ of a ski, would like to get a few more good years out of it & would like it to be a little faster on the top end, to keep up with all my buddies. Tips, tricks, and add on's are strongly welcome.

the impeller is the only thing that I can think of we had one that was loosing top end and replaced the aluminum one with a stainless one, it went a lot faster on top end once we changed it. I was informed that the aluminum impellers were only good for a few years and after that they needed to be upgraded. I worked quite nicely.

I found one at www.jetkingparts.com They sell used parts, if they don't have one for that ski you may need to buy a new one, you also need a tool for removing the impeller it isn 't expensive, maybe 15 dollars.

The latest, Changed the pick up grate and noticed a lot of white bumps on the impeller and and the multi fin thing after it. Anyone have a good wat to clean them? If I scap the bumps, they turn into white powder. Still looking for a ss impeller, bidding on one @ ebay now.

Re: 95 VXR Yamaha

that is galvonic corrosion, I bet the pump liner is getting bulges in it as well, that builds up behind the liner and deforms it causing it to make contact with the impeller and I would not be surprised if a new impeller will rub when it is installed, remove the pump housing and soak it in a bucket of water with a bottle of c l r added to the water, then add a zink anode to the inside of the ride plate out of the way so it reduces further corrosion.

Well,

Got the pump all apart, and your correct, the new impeller doesn't even fit! It's definitely the right impeller, but there is white crap on the inside of the impeller housing. I am soaking it in CLR & water now, will this really open it back up, or do I need a new housing? What kind of clearance should I have once I get the impeller in? I am assuming I should NOT use force to get the impeller into the housing. The housing doesn't show too much scraping, but the old impeller was TRASHED, it looked like the pits in the blades were almost through and through! All of this from 6 months sitting in fresh water! We must have really bad water!! I will add a few anodes to the ride plate, and NEVER leave it in the water again!

Re: 95 VXR Yamaha

if it is as bad as you say //throw it out it will never be any good, it is about 200 for the part of the pump with the liner in it, the liner is 2 mm thick and it is formed to the housing, it is not replaceable so you need a new housing or you will ruin the impeller, once you replace this it will surprise you how big a difference it makes, you may find a good used one for about half the cost of a new one, try parts@jetkingparts.com tell them I sent you, so you get a good price. When you add a zink anode it will definitely help prevent this problem in the future.

Re: 95 VXR Yamaha

Thanks guys, but it cleaned up pretty good. I put a ss impeller & new gr8. WOW, whata difference. I mean, it's not gonna keep up with my 1200, but dang, it picked up 12 mph & 0 to 40 is WAY WAY better. So, after all the work I'll probably sell it. Cross checked it with my 2 other machines & figured it has just under / over 80 hours on it. 95% shape, one scratch 6" long on the side. What's it worth? Whats my black with storage 2 place trailer worth? Any ideas?

Re: 95 VXR Yamaha

I have a 94 VXR wit the same engine as your 95. I also changed the impeller with similar results. Another thing I did that really helped the whole shot was to change the factory reeds with a set of carbon fiber ones. I also changed out the stock carburetor filter with one form K&N. I got both of these parts from Riva Yamaha’s website. I haven’t been out there in a long time; I hope they still have them.

These changes and a new water grate really help in the wake jumping arena.
