Went out to prep boat for Powell trip. Going to clean carb with spray carb cleaner. Took the air deflectors off of the metering rod caps and left screws off. With the engine running! Both plates that cover the metering rods popped off and sucked into the intake. No question I'm an idiot. I even thought about what could happen, but it didn't stop me.

Now what do I do? Take off the intake? Pull the heads? Run it fast and hope they blow through the system? I'm only half joking on the last one.

Unless you opened up the throttle the caps should be sitting on the throttle plates.

It kept running and I could hear a knock/click, maybe in the combustion chamber hanging up on a valve or maybe 'welded' to to the top of the cylinder or spark plug.

Maybe I should pull the plugs and turn it over?

Unfortunately they are definitely not there.

how ya gonna feel if ya don't go get it and ya waste the cyl. had me a nozzel fall of my qjet once. no way around it, had to have the head off to go get the pieces....it was in a van with a 350 qjet. was lookin right at it when, woosh, it just got sucked up. i was at wot, it stuck in the throttle plates, got unstuck, got hung up in the valves and ran poorly for a moment, and then made it's way to the top of the piston where ya could hear it rattlein around. after gettin the pieces out i got away with just puttin it back together. i felt lucky it only cost me some time and gaskets.......

Naturally I'm going to feel terrible if I break more stuff due to my stupidity. When I pull the intake and the head what are the likely potential victims of the metal intrusion? Piston, Valve, Head, ???

Well I know it's been a real cliff hanger :^, but I got my boat back last week from a local repair guy and there was no significant damage done. The metal piece was bent a bit and found on top of the aft piston on the port side. He said there was no harm done. He did find a bit of water intrusion from bad flapper valves so he replaced those as well as a full gasket set for intake, exhaust, and head. Less than $400 all told. I'm felling great. Of course I'm sorry I missed my Powell trip, but it won't be long. It's supposed to be 70 degrees tomorrow.
