My flywheel has worn teeth (in four spots 90 deg apart on ring gear corresponding to where the engine has stopped over the last 18 yrs) and the starter pinion will not engage. I cannot seem to find any good source for the part as this item is listed as "obsolete" and is not being offered by the manufacturer part diagrams. My questions are:

1. Has anyone found a source for just the ring gear? I could take to a machine shop, heat the gear and the old one will fall off and a new one installed just like a car part?
2. Can a Merc 115-2St be used as a replacement?
3. What is the range of model years for the same part so I can expand my search?
4. Are any other engines using the same part in the model year range?
2. Any good sources for replacement flywheel for this engine?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

After looking at what you sent, it looks like mine should be Part #859236t13. I believe the one you are recommending is for the other style which I do not have-according to the Ser number. Am I right?

Thanks for your help. Even though this has turned out to be an expensive fix, the motor and boat are in such good shape it's worth it. I found the part (thanks to your help) and got a discount from the Dealer here in Denver. They matched the "Buster's Marine" Ebay offering price and it should arrive within a few days. Thanks again, excellent site.
