95 Johnson 70HP quits while idling.

I have a 70HP Johnson that dies when idling after the engine gets warm. The motor sat up for almost 1 1/2 yrs. without being used. I took the boat to a local marine dealer and they cleaned and installed a new kit to the carburetor. I have drained the gas twice after advice from others. The motor runs great for a hour or two then it dies when trying to idle or at trolling speed. Any advice would be appreciated.

Let me correct my initial message. The only way we can keep the motor running when at idle is to set the idle (choke?) high.

Took the boat out yesterday, runs great with just a little throttle, however the thing still will not idle. Let me add, that the horn alarm is a steady tone which indicates "fuel flow restriction". I have checked all of my gas lines and they look fine. I am wondering if this is an issue with my oil which is external from the gas tank?

Re: 95 Johnson 70HP quits while idling.

I have a 95 50 hp Johnson and had the same prob 2 years ago. Mechanic said i needed to rebuild the carbs, but wanted to much plus i could do it a lot cheaper just never got around to it yet. But what i did do is to get a cpl cans of marine gumout( not the same name but same principle), it cleaned out the varnish on the carbs. then i installed a water seperator. It helped a bunch, but still didnt idle very well. I ended up having to adjust the fuel pressure regulator That worked great. Hope this helps.
p.s. you shouldn't need to adjust it much, just a slight turn, play with it a little and should work fine.
woody

Thanks for the reply H20dog, I will buy some cans of marine cleaner as soon as possible. I am new to this, so let me ask a couple of questions. How would I go about installing a water seperator and what exactly does it do? Also, how do I adjust the fuel pressure regulator? Again, thank you very much for the help!

not sure what kind of boat you have, I have a 18' alum. jon boat...duck hunting rig. but basically I just mounted it close to the tank, run fuel line from the tank to the filter, then fuel line with primer bulb to motor. The fuel pressure regulator on mine is behind the throttle linkage, its a red thingamajig(?) start engine and adjust it SLOWLY it doesnt take much and be careful of the moving parts.

oh and a water seperator removes water from the fuel. you might not need it, but only cost 25 bucks. I need it because i run my boat mostly during the winter months...then again you usually get condensation during summer months as well.

I have a 17' aluminum bass boat that has spent most of its time in the Mississippi River catfishing. Thanks for the help. I'm going to try out your suggestions first thing. Thanks again, H20dog!
