Hi all
I recently acquired a Lowe 165 boat with a 95 50hp Johnson outboard. Engine did not run when I got it from a family member that had gotten the power head rebuilt by a local shop but was never satisfied with it. I have cleaned the carbs and have gotten it to run again. I have a manual for it and have watched several YouTube videos about doing a link and sync which I recently did but would not even start after that. I tried the Joe Reeves timing method and could barely get it in the BTDC area of the flywheel. I checked with a piston stop tool to verify that the flywheel key had not been sheared and it was dead nuts on zero. So my question is why can am I not able to get it to the 15 degrees of advanced timing? Actual spec is 19 degrees but for the Joe Reeves method I need to set it 4 degrees below the spec. Thanks in advance for any input.
