I have a 1995 Yamaha 9.9 4 stroke (high thrust, electric start, tiller). The engine runs really nice, smooth and quiet but on cold start its a pain. Once its warm you just flick the starter button and its running, but cold it takes A LOT of cranking, i have to crank about 5 times, each time for about 7 seconds, then when it starts it caughs and sputters for about 3 or 4 seconds then comes to life and it runs perfect!

What do you think the problem is, carb need cleaning? Spark plugs are fresh. Gas is fresh.

Test your electrothermal valve for grounding, shorts and proper operation; the ohms between two black wires should 4.8 -7.2.

OK, the ET valve sits on top of and to the side of the carb, it has two wires from memory both black, one is ground, which are hooked up to wiring harness. check ohms and then connect both wires to 6 - 12 volt power, for about 3 minutes, observe the ETvalves' plunger and needle; if the plunger protrudes out from the ETvalve body 4 -6 mm then it is working, if no movement, replace it.
