Imagine my excitement when I found the keys and prop in the box when I opened it.

My father gave me his old 95-96 225 offshore 3.0L carburated motor (will confirm with serial numbers after weekend) as he repowered his rig with a 225 yammy 4 stroke after this 225 merc burnt a piston. The bad piston has a chunk out of one side of it. The only thing is....that it is not all together yet. All the parts are there and the machine work is done. Punched out one cyl. and replacing the one piston with weisco. All that is left is the assembly. We plan to get to it this weekend. We will take our time to be sure we do it right.

He said I can sell it or whatever I want to do. I would really like to keep it as I know I would never be able to get another motor like this ($), plus, it really means alot to me.

I am used to working on the old inlines and I messed around with a v-4 Johnson. (very low dollar machines) We have the manual and my father and I have good basic knowledge and a clean place to work on it. I personally have no experience with the new ones and none above the 150hp range.

The questions I have
1. Are these 3.0L (carburated) blocks good? Any mechanical problems these are prone to? I have little to no money to put into this motor if it frys again.

2. I want to make sure fix the problem the motor had so it doesn't blow up again. Any suggestions to look for with this type of damage? Timing and syc? Jet size? Fuel in tanks too old? My father thinks he simply had the motor under too much load as he has a 21 ft Center Console with 10 people on it and full fuel tanks. (He said he had a hard time planing out) This motor never idled exactly right. It would stall once in a while when we were trolling. He took it to several certified merc mechanics, they messed with jets quite a bit. No change. My father changed the fuel lines, put a fuel water separator, changed the MPG sensor/unit, rebuilt carbs. Then it blew up and he got the Yammy. He has been working on the Merc for about a year now off and on.

3. In the manual, it calls for all quicksilver grease, needle bearing keeping grease, sealers, oil, etc. Is it in your opinion ok to substitute these?

Thanks in advance for any help,
Mike

This is just a personal opinion, but I won't use Wisco as they are forged as opposed to the factory ones which are cast. Different expansion properties (at least for the inlines).

I will use Mercury, Pro-Marine, Sierra, or even Vertex. I tend to look for pistons machined from Persan (a S.American caster) brand slugs.

-W
