I have an on-going issue with this engine overheating. I had problems earlier this year that a new water pump impeller took care of but the problem is back. Unfortunatly, the slip I am in now is very shallow. Just about every time I start the engine, it sucks up some thick, black mud from the bottom, even if I dont put the outboard fully down when starting. What usually happens is I get the motor running and from 15 to 60 seconds later, the horn starts blowing solid and the S.L.O.W system kicks in. At times, I have found and removed debris from the thermostats that cured the problem. Other times, I have found nothing. Could the water passages in my heads be clogged with hardened mud ? My water preassure gauge will show 10 psi or more and I had a good tell-tail stream going when the alarm sounds. Should I remove the thermostats and see what happens ? I think my pump is OK cause when everything is working, I get 25 PSI or more on the water preassure gauge. By the way, does the gauge sense preasure before, or after the heads / block?

Before....and yes your block is likley pluged up big time.

If it were my motor I would drop lower unit and replace impeller.

And while Iam at it I would duct tape a garden hose to the water inlet tube going up to power head.

Remove t..stats and flush it for bout uh six packs worth...uh time...hopefuly that will melt all the crud out of your block.

Put it all back to gather and see if she still over heats while running on the muffs.

And also look for a better place to park....Grin!

Good luck!

Any mud you suck up in it is wearing out your impellor too.

Have you taken apart the pressure relief valve and cleaned out the hole and area it seats in? Also either buy a '97 or later valve tip which has air bleed grooves or drill a 3/32" hole in the center of it so it will bleed air and fill up the water cavity quicker.

If the motor has been severely overheated, you may have to remove the heads and replace the water deflectors in the block.

Could you pole out into deeper water?
