Need to replace a rod in a 94 DT140 and was told by a local mechanic that I had to replace all the rods and the crank as an assembly. Since the parts list shows rods available individually is he blowing smoke to drive up the price. Anyone know if single rod can be replaced. thxs jtlt98

I would think that you could get them as individual parts. THe mechanic may want to have all of them replaced though because the bad rod could have damaged the journal on the crank. If you are replacing one rod and a crank due to damage, it is not a bad idea to replace all rods.

EDIT... The crankshaft and connecting rods on a 94 DT 140 are one assembly... The rods can't be removed from the crankshaft...

not sure on the 140 but on the V6's and V4's the rods are one piece and the crank in multi piece so the after the rod is put on a journal the next piece of the crank is pressed on.
I think this takes $pecial equipment to do right. I know the price of a rebuilt/repressed crank in a v6 is not that far away from a new one.

If it was my money, I would find a used one. If you can, check the big end play with a dial guage.
