94 Seadoo SPX missing and bogging

Just bought a 94 SPX. Took it for a test spin the day I bought it for about 15 minutes and it ran really crisp and strong. Guy had just done the top end of the motor and carbs. The next day I got it back to my lake and it ran the same. Would come out of the hole really strong and get right up on plain.

The following day I noticed it started to skip/miss slightly and I thought the cobwebs just needed to be knocked out.

Next day....put it on the water again and the skip got worse and sometimes the ski wouldn't even get on plain. skipping/missing really bad at this point and when the throttle is released and it comes back to idle it stalls. But it will start right back up.

Went home pulled the plugs and they seemed clean. filled up the tank with fresh fuel and took it back to the water and now it just bogs out at about half power. Will not get on plain at all.

Any suggestions?

Does it still have the original gray fuel lines? If so you'll have to change them and clean the carbs.

It's a known problem with those, the lines create a green goo that clogs the carbs. If you google it there is a lot of info on the subject.

Yes it did have the grey lines. Replaced all of them today after researching...thx for your advice.

Then I got to thinking...with such a slow gradual decline in performance it seemed like the battery could have been going dead.

So I charged the battery today all day while doing the hoses and other things, checked the voltage with the machine off and I got 12.5v.

Then I started the machine at idle and I was reading 12.6v. After reading up on it people are saying it should be around 14.5 volts??

Bad rectifier?

Maybe.

Did you clean the carbs out? Replacing the lines will only prevent future clogging. 20 years of running with gray lines has most likely left the internal fuel filter in the carbs clogged. One sign of this is when the ski surges while riding it.

This was pulled out of a 96 with 84 hours on it. Compared next to a new one. Filter.jpg

The previous owner just had the carbs done. So the rebuilt carbs maybe has 5 hrs on them with the grey lines. I'm hoping nothing clogged in that amount of time.

I ordered a rectifier, will install this weekend. If that doesnt do it, off with the carbs...:-D

not sure about the rectifier, iirc, the voltage has to be checked at a higher RPM than idle. the fuel line are notorious for dumping junk in the inline filters in the carb. another thought. if the top end was just redone, was it broken in? i'd check the compression to make sure you didn't lose a ring secondary to not being seated properly.

+1 to Brian's discussion about the grey tempo fuel lines. I have a Seadoo '95 GTX, and when I bought it...it had the grey fuel lines. Same kinda problems...bogging down, cutting out when giving it throttle. I finally took it into the Seadoo dealership here locally, and they cleaned and overhauled the carbs and filters well. I picked it up, took it straight home and immediately replaced the grey tempo fuel lines (without starting it up). Since then, it runs like a champ.
