94 OMC Four Winns - Gimbal & Parts Help - Rebuild Thread

Hello All!

Seems like a great forum.

My wife and I recently picked up a 1994 Four Winns Horizon 180 SE. Interior is great, but the drive is another story...we are determined to get this thing going!

Anyway, I researched the sticky's and didn't have much luck trying to find more information around compatibility of parts among other OMC Drives etc. I've mostly been looking on Ebay for the parts I need but am hesitant to purchase any without verifying with the experts first

These are the parts I am going to need...just not sure what all I can use in terms of compatibility. Any help is highly appreciated, thanks group!

-Gimbal Housing - Shows 852274-D2 on the housing. (is this compatible? 913261, OMC Gimbal Housing 5.0 Liter Part,)
I understand we must pull the motor, etc. Ive done a few engine swaps here and there, and have my SELOC manual ready! I'm thinking it might be beneficial to purchase a gimbal with all the attachments (to make life a bit easier - as I'm not sure what parts are missing between the gimbal and the stern drive at this point. This is what I had in mind: OMC Cobra Gimbal Transom Assembly Very Nice Fresh Water from 1989 Boat | eBay)

-Drive Shaft - (I understand I would have to replace the gears, but would this work? Yoke Off OMC Gears in Bad Shape 21 18 Gear | eBay)
The OMC stern drive was included with the boat, though not attached to the boat as the owner knew he had gimbal housing issues (Gimbal bearing housing is shot). The OMC stern drive spins freely but the drive shaft is not attached and not included.

Here are the details on the boat itself:

The boat says "Volvo Penta Marine Products" though the stern drive says OMC - please move the thread if this is the wrong place! I figured because the engine runs fine, I would put it here.

Engine: Model 502ACPMDA SN T01273090
Transom Assembly: Model 3868030 SN T00349153
Drive Unit: Model 3868076 SN T00786230
Gimbal: 852274-D2

You basically have a Volvo SX drive. Model number is "MD".

Not sure about the first link you posted but the other 2 are definitely not for your drive. Stop searching for OMC Cobra and search for Volvo SX.

Not sure about the first link you posted but the other 2 are definitely not for your drive. Stop searching for OMC Cobra and search for Volvo SX.

Those were the years of the OMC/Volvo joint venture. Starting in 1994, they switched over to the SX drives.

Okay makes sense. Might be a dumb question,but would the Volgograd gimbal setup be compatible with the omc sterndrive I have?

Go to shop.evinrude.com, and go to Parts, change the drop down to Sterndrives, then go 1994 ,then "5", then 502ACPMDA and you will have an online parts book with exploded views of everything on your engine and drive. From the belts right to the propeller in these groupings:

Thanks Bruce and Howard, both of your links were awesome.

Honestly, I am having a very tough time finding a gimbal housing for this specific year/Engine model. From what I have found, it seems these gimbals are only transferable between 1994-1995 housings.

For my Engine model number 502ACPMDA and Year (1994), I should be using a 3850713 which was replaced by 3851976 gimbal (according to marineengine). I am having little to no luck finding this part! Any more suggestions??

Really the only one I have found is this one on ebay: Volvo Gimbal Housing Assembly 3851968 OMC Cobra 1994 1995 302 5 0L V8 905 | eBay

Thanks for this. I am trying to use this logic and am finding many SX-C, -A, etc. Any idea on which mine might be? Having trouble determining this specific dash.
