Was left this from estate. No tiltle and S#'s are aged away. So... kind on my own here and new to outboards. From what Ive read 92-94 where kinda built from whatever was laying around the factory ha! Think Ive got about every dif thats possible.

Issues I guess. 1) 16 amp or 9 amp system; 2) Is it a one or two cable control (throttle/shift) sytem. 3) What is on the Switchbox (a mod?)

1) It has a red stator. I read someplace that red was 16 amp system (or I might have been dreaming)

2)Doesnt make sense how one cable could work. Throttle cable attach point is approx 2" above the shift cable attach point. Missing parts?

3) I dont know if "a switchbox is a swithbox" or dif depending on amperage. Anyway, this one has an additional box attached. Some type mod? Maybe a 9 to 16 amp mod?

Also, it has a 92C fuel pump but the carb is a later S# style. Just having a problem figuring out what I have! And w/o a serial number its kinda been a mess. Looking at pics on line, I do have a regulator vs. a rectifier but not sure that insures I have 16 amp system. One part book has common part numbers while another manual will caution as to the dif.

Without a S#, hard to even find a carb kit, impeller, etc.

Well, guess thats a start. Any help/direction would be appreciated.
I do have a manual for it. But pretty much talks in generic form. No real guidence.

Yes you need 2 cables for shift/throttle. Yes a part is missing.

THe box attached to the switchbox is referred to as a "candybar" adaptor.

It came with some of the replacement stators years ago, stators that only came with 2 wires. Makes me think it is a replacement stator. Adaptor was needed to make it work with the switchbox.

You have the newer style switchbox, with the bullet connectors on the wires. But I think all the 40 hp used that one.

1992-1994 40hp used impeller part number 47 - F433065-2, $15 from any Merc dealer.

Could this motor be newer than 1994? Maybe a 95 or 96?

Does it have the old style solid propeller or the newer Mercury open prop for the exhaust?

Re: 94? Force 40

could you tell me what part(s) are missing in the throttle/shift attachment? nome/part number something so I can start looking for it/them.

As for as prop, its the old style solid.

Year I really dont know. Everyone said it was a 94 but I doubt anyone really knows.

thanks, again.

Any shot at how to tell the amps with out pulling it all apart and running a test?

A better starboard view of the motor/power head would help, but it
looks like you're missing the shift cable. If I'm seeing it right, your
shift linkage is not connected to a cable at all.

If it's anything like my older 50hp, then both the throttle and shift
cables come in on the starboard side (pic #4) below where you
see the fuel filter (currently doesn't have a fuel hose hooked to it,
but the part is 'round', black and has a 'big' coming off at about 5
o'clock.

I only know this because I just had to replace the linkage on mine.
Sorry, though, I don't know the part # for a shift cable, and again
I would post a better "full view" of both sides, probably.

Here is a diagram showing the shift and throttle linkage.

It looks like there were a couple versions of this also, see the parts listing in the link.

Perhaps we will be able to further narrow down the year by comparing your motor to the parts listing and diagram.

Ok, so the prop/lower unit confirms the 92-94.
The fuel pump confirms late 92 or 93.

Looks like your motor has parts 11A and 24A, so it appears NOT to be a 92C, but newer. Since the old style fuel pump was only used thru 93, it looks like you have a 93, with the older 2 stage fuel pump.

Re: 94? Force 40

Thanks for the reply. You are correct. No cables at all. Need to buy! Just not sure what to order and Im 70+ miles from anything so have to do it over the net.

Also correct, the fuel line isnt hooked up. Ready to hang this thing just trying to get all the parts together lol

Yes, there is a place for the cables to come in. Ive looked at FORCE universal cables online. Doesnt look like they would work unless there are parts missing. The Merc/Mariner cable look like they would work. The cable attachment on the force have bushings and a nut on top. Looks like the Merc/mariner Cable ends have a hole drilled in the ends and would slip right on the bushing of both the throttle and shift cable. Guess thats where Im getting a little confused. Force parts doent look right. Merc/Mariner DO. That might be common on this model.

(pics where pretty big. Hope they upload. thanks again.

Re: 94? Force 40

Could very well be a newer model, in which case the Merc parts would be
the correct ones. Force, of course, was acquired by Mercury and I understand
the latter ones where basically Mercs with a "Force" sticker on them.
