Johnson 40H 2 cycle in water can only get to 3100 RPM. Out of water with muffs and hose can get to 5000 RPM. So far, changed fuel filter, used carb cleaner, also used carb cleaner in fuel. Changed prop. No improvement from any.

First of all PLEASE DO NOT EVER freewheel your motor up that high again. Is this the first time you have done this?

Yes, as we could not get rpms on the water and tried the recommended solutions we were attempting to see if they worked.

Re: 94/95 40H Johnson HELP!

The reason Hondon questions this is because outboards are not engineered to rev that high without a load on them. Lot's of nasty things can occur when this happens...none of which are beneficial to your engine. Often times, the only way to properly troubleshoot an engine is when it's being run under load. It's like when you run as fast as you can down a very steep hill...pretty soon your legs can't carry you fast enough and you begin tripping over your own feet... The same goes with the power train components of your engine when it's running as fast as it can without a load on it.

Anyway, enough lecture. Hope you get your problem repaired soon...
