cannot get this engine to idle, even out of gear. It fires up, no problem most everytime. Then after 10 -15 seconds it dies. Just as if you turned off the fuel supply.

-had removed the carbs and had them cleaned at shop.
-link and synch after that.
-replaced in-line fuel filter.
-tried a different (external) fuel tank and hose.
-used the Joe Reeves adjustment method on the carbs. Everything went as Joe described using the fast idle lever to keep it running while doing the adjustments. However, once I finished the adjustment, I could not go to full throttle without it dying out. Also, Joe says to back out the mechanical idle stop screw and use the trunion to adjust idle speed. My problem is that the idle stop screw was already turned in as far as it would go so I had no room to play with.

Tried timing it at idle, in gear, on the trailer, in the water @ about 1100 rpms. Did this during the 10 - 15 seconds it would run. On the flywheel it was at about 8 degrees BTDC, 12 degrees BTDC on the gun. The Clymer manual says it should be at 1-3 degrees ATDC !!!!

So, any suggestions on where to go from here? And what about the timing being so far advanced? Is it because it is running at 1100 rpms?

I appreciate any advice.
