I have 93 XP I cannot get it to crank over or the starter to engage. I did put a volt meter on the battery while pressing the start button and the volts did not drop they stayed at 12 volts.

first be sure the engine or pump are not seized up.. remove the plugs and turn the flywheel behind the engine by hand,, if it won't turn look at the drive shaft bearing,, the pump housing and the engine itself,, if all is ok start checking ground wires and fuses,, also do a direct jump across the big terminals on the start solenoid

Re: 93 XP electrical problem

sounds like the solenoid has died, they like todo that.

pull your battery, and then pull out the grey electrical box located on the port side of the hull, in front of the exhaust. ( it's where all the wiring is coming from!

open the grey box up by depressing all the tabs and pulling the two halves apart, dont go crazy, be careful-

i bet there's moisture in there, you've got a 15 year old boat and at some point in time the compression plugs that waterproof that box broke and allowed moisture in.... maybe....

anyway now that you're in there- go ahead and pull your sparkplugs, ground the leads to the ground post located on the front of the mag housing. you can reattach your battery,or remotely attach it to the leads with a set of jumper cables..... try to spin it over. if it doesnt spin over, short the starter solenoid, or just move your positive terminal directly to the starterlead lug terminal. did the motor turn over? if so you either have a bad solenoid (very common) or something wrong with your safety lanyard/stop button loop (lesscommon, but not impossible) if you have a good ground, and you've applied 12v directly to the starter lead, either the cable is bad,or the starter is bad. it's a pain to do, but you can remove the starter without pulling the exhaust- one 13mm bolt on the nose, by where the negative lead is bolted on the motor, and another you'll have to get at from the rear with a 3/8 ratchet, an extension, and a deep 13 socket. suck the starter out the back.

bear in mind it is expremely dangerous to go arcing terminals in the hull, andis fuel is present you'll blow up- so if you've got fuel in the bilge get it all out and aired out before proceeding...

need any clarification? just say so...

Re: 93 XP electrical problem

The engine turns fine. The starter is about two years old. I did remove the electrical box and as soon as I openned up the box water poured out of it. I left it sit open to dry out. After further inspection found the Multi-purpose electronic module 5 amp fuse fell apart in hand and the fuse holder for the 5 amp fuse one of the ears broke off and does not hold the fuse (make good electrical contact). The other fuses are in good shape. I am in the process of taking apart the connectors in the box one at a time and cleaning and drying the connections. But my problem in with the fuse in the module.
