had a similar problem earlier this season. mine turned out to be the low speed adjustment on the carbs was all over the map. my spec calls for 1 1/2 to 2 turns out from seated. i found anywhere from 1 turn to 3 turns. evened them all out at 2 and it starts and runs better.

CHECK THE COMPRESSION FIRST. ITS SOUNDS LIKE THE CARBS NEED TO BE CLEANED. THE CD BOX ON THAT ENGINE HAS A LIFE CYCLE OF ABOUT 8 SEASONS I FIND THAT CD BOX TO MAKE THE ENGINE HARD TO START AND AS TIME GOES ON THE BOX WILL DOUBLE FIRE AND CAUSE THE ENGINE TO IDLE POORLY. YOU CAN LOOK AT THE FIRE WITH A SPARK TESTER FOR 6 CYLINDERS. IF THE CARBS HAVENT BEEN CLEANED IN A COUPLE YEARS AND THE COMPRESSION GOOD START THERE. CLEAN THEM WITH ENGINE TUNER MADE BY VALVE TECH. THAT ENGINE HAS TO HAVE THE CARBS SYN. AND CHECK THE LINKAGE TO IDLE CORRECTLY. VINNEY

It sounds like it may have a problem in the Quick Start mode.

Are you advancing the throttle for cold starts or letting the motor rev up by itself?

Are the thermostats in?
