Hi All. I just bought a 93 Sunbird Neptune 202 WA with a 93 Johnson 140HP OceanRunner, and my first time out, after running it open throttle for about 10 minutes, I got an overtemp alarm. I immediately shut the boat down, because at the time I wasn't sure what the alarm was. I started it back up, and the alarm stopped, but I couldn't give it any throttle, or it would bog the motor down. There was water coming out of the port on the motor, so I am assuming it was circulating, but not knowing a whole lot about outboards, I didn't know what else to look for. Can anyone give me some ideas on what the problem could be? I did go for a test ride with the seller, but we didn't have it opened up very long. Just my luck.

There are two possible problems with the initiation of the constant tone alarm. One is overheat that limits the rpms to around 2500 when initiated from the temp sensor , and the other is a fuel restriction alarm which is initiated from a sensor near the VRO pump , but will not automatically limit rpms unless of course the restriction itself limits them through fuel starvation. You'll definately want to insure that the waterpump and thermostats are operating properly as repeated overheat can lead to serious problems.Otherwise insure that the fuel filter on the inlet side of VRO pump is clean and clear as well as the fuel tank pickup and any other inline filters that may be present.

With any "new to me" motor you need to change the water pump and thermostats.

Oh and WELCOM!!!!
