My daughters station wagon stalls at any speed weather it's 5 mph or 60 mph. Totally unpridictably. She had it to a repair station 4 times in the past 2 weeks. The distributor cap and other repairs were made but the symptoms remain unchanged. At times it will restart and other times it don't want to start again.

Any ideas?

fuel filter fuel pump probably the pump
that's the most common problem, but could be many others, you need to check the fuel pressure and the spark when it wont run, if it has the ignition module on the side of the distributor or the fender well that's a common failure also

[colour=blue]Ignition module. Unfortunately, very difficult to 100% diagnose, gotta wait for it to completely fail.

Wait you live on Long Island...... Have the fuel safety switch checked. A good pothole will make it engage and it could be going bad. I have seen that happen in Ford's before. The problem will drive you nuts.

I have never seen a inertia switch re-engage once it has tripped, but I guess it's possible
I have seen pleanty fail ie: tripped, burnt wires

BTW when you replace the module you will need a special little ratchet you can buy where you purchase the module, unless it's on the fender, if it's on the distributor and you have to turn the distributor to get to it be sure to mark the position of the distributor so you can return it to the exact location

Check the systems ground wire connector at the battery(10 guage wire with pastic connector located about 8 inches from battery).

Also what xtraham said.

Until you know whether you are losing spark or fuel, you can throw parts at it all day long and not fix anything.

A good "wiggle" test of every wire under the hood may tell you a great deal.

Also, check the gounds between the engine and the body.

As mentioned, also check the connecter at the fuel pump shut off (inertia) switch.

I seriously doubt it is the TFI module.

Re: 93 Ford Taurus stalls at any speed

I had an '87 Sable station wagon that had this exact problem years back. It was a bad connection at the ignition switch in the steering column. (plug had partially unplugged from the key switch). I finally figured it out by realizing that it seemed to happen more after gas stops on road trips... Was because I'd adjust the tilt on the wheel when getting in/out of the car. Once I realized this, I could make the problem happen at will by manipulating the steering wheel tilt. (tilting it down all the way)

It was an easy fix... open up steering column, plug wiring onto switch propertly, free up a bit of slack to so it wouldn't pull when activating the tilt. I was worried it might have been a cracked wire in the steering column, but it was only a partially unplugged connector.

Anyway, something for you to consider. By the way, no it's not fun having a car intermittently stall on the interstate at 70+ mph...

Good luck.

Thanks for all the excellent tips. I sent them on to my daughter. When I get the results, I'll post again.

Thank you,

My sincere thanks to all who responded. "Problem Solved".
The car has not stalled in the 10 days since the ignition module was replaced.
It's great to have a place like this to bring problems.

Thanks very much,
Nick

Was it the module or connection? My bet is on the latter.

Too late to tell now.

Re: 93 Ford Taurus stalls at any speed

Since the car was serviced by a local shop, I have no way of knowing with any confidance. At this point I am happy that the problem is gone. (She did show him this thread after he made several unsuccessful attempts to correct the problem.)
