I have a 93 Force 40 HP, it starts and runs fine, but when youre riding along, the engine will make a thunping noise. When it does this, the engine also Jerks forward. When it starts acting up, throttle and trim settings have no effect on it. I brought it to the dealer and they said everything was fine with it, they even test rode it on the lake. The only possibility they could think of was an intermittant miss in the ignition stator. Could this be an ignition problem? When it makes the noise the engine does not start to miss, it always runs just fine. Any help would be very helpful.

Possibly a worn clutchdog in the lower unit, or the shift linkage is slightly out of adjustment, causing the motor to momentarily pop out of gear.

I have a 89 Force 50 HP that does the same thing sb0717. I concur with rosco on the pop out of gear thing, but I've noticed that it does it more frequently when I use a spare tank that I suspect may have some water in it. One of my tanks is new, and my primary fuel supply, the other a very old one with a defective fuel gauge and lousy primer bulb, so I only use it if I run the other empty and need to get back to the landing. The gas is kinda old in the spare tank, and I'm sure has some water in it. I hope its just a little slug of water getting to the carburetor causing those intermittent burps when under throttle.
