Just took my boat out for the first time of the season this past week end.

Every thing went great except the motor was loading up at low rpm. After

being at idle for more than 30 seconds, engine shuts down and smells of fuel.

When I get the engine restarted and get it in gear, from 1/8 throttle to wide

open it runs like a champ. It runs fine out of the water, I'm guessing becuase

there is no back pressure on exhaust? Before I ran her, I changed wires and

plugs. Sorry I don't own a compression tester :(. Any input would be greatly

appreciated before I try and rebuild the carbs. Thanks

Do you have a choke plate on each carb, or do you have the fuel enrichment solenoid? If you have a fuel enrichment solenoid, it may be leaking and not shutting completely off when disengaged. You can test by pinching off the supply line to the solenoid from the carburetor bowl. I believe it's the top carb fuel bowl.

Fuel recirculation system. There's a couple of check valves in the fuel recirculation system that may get clogged or stuck open. Also the rubber fuel recirculation lines themselves may get clogged with old gummy fuel/oil mixture. They're pretty small in diameter, so it's not difficult for them to clog.

Does your primer bulb get good and firm after squeezing 4 or 5 times? If so then your needle valves in the carbs are sealing properly. If not, then the needle valves may need to be replaced or float adjustment is off. Note: make sure the motor is in the down position and level.
